The mother of 15-year-old Ghanaian student Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong has made an emotional appeal for justice after arriving in New York, six days after her son was fatally shot in the Bronx.
Madam Doris Adu Gyamfi arrived in the United States on Wednesday, November 4, ahead of funeral arrangements for the teenager, who was killed while walking to school on October 29.
Speaking after her arrival, she said: “I want justice for my son, that is all.”
She also revealed that Javits had hoped to become a medical doctor, expressing the pain of losing a child whose future held so much promise.
The teenager was a Grade 10 student at DreamYard Preparatory School. He had moved from Ghana to the United States about a year earlier to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong.
According to police, three masked individuals approached Javits near Crotona Park shortly before 9:30 a.m. on the day of the shooting. The teenager reportedly tried to escape but was pursued and shot. The suspects allegedly retrieved shell casings before fleeing the scene.
No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday, with investigators continuing their search for the three suspects.
New York police are examining several possible motives, including robbery, mistaken identity and alleged bullying at school. However, authorities have not established what led to the killing or confirmed a connection between the reported school incidents and the shooting.
Ghana’s government has supported the family with travel arrangements, while officials at the country’s mission in New York are expected to assist the mother during her stay.
For the family, the immediate demand remains clear: those responsible for Javits’ death must be identified and brought to justice.
