United Party (UP) leader Alan Kyerematen has explained that time constraints influenced his decision to contest Ghana’s 2024 presidential election under the Movement for Change rather than establish a fully-fledged political party.
Alan Kyerematen resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on September 25, 2023, weeks after he lost the presidential primaries. He then went ahead to contest the December 2024 election under the Movement for Change.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, September 21, Alan Kyerematen said there was insufficient time between his departure from the NPP and the election to establish a conventional political party.
He explained that the Movement for Change therefore provided the political vehicle needed to participate in the election while advancing the principles behind his political agenda.
“When I left the NPP, the time was too short for me to organise a full political party but to be able still to show up in the general election, obviously, you needed some kind of vehicle.”
Kyerematen added that the key consideration was not simply the structure used to contest the election, but the principles underpinning the Movement for Change.
