President John Dramani Mahama has called on churches and other religious organisations to take a more active role in Ghana’s development by helping address social, economic, healthcare and moral challenges.

He said faith-based institutions had the influence, resources and structures to support government initiatives and improve the living conditions of citizens.

Mahama made the call during the induction of Rev. Dr Stephen Yenusom Wengam for a second four-year term as General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana.

He urged religious organisations to go beyond their spiritual responsibilities and contribute to national efforts through initiatives that promote social responsibility, moral values and public welfare.

The President also said the government had set aside GH¢100 million in the national budget to complete remand prison facilities nationwide.

According to him, the projects are expected to be completed next year as part of measures to improve infrastructure and conditions within Ghana’s prison system.

He said religious institutions would help complement the government’s work and support communities facing various challenges.

The induction ceremony formally begins Rev. Wengam’s second four-year tenure as head of the Assemblies of God, Ghana.
