Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has explained why he fled the Accra High Court after an alleged attempt by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to take him into custody.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, September 23, Baffour Awuah, who is also the lawyer for Salomey Baffoe, said the woman who approached him claimed to be an EOCO official but could not provide evidence of her identity or authority to arrest him.
He said he offered to drive himself to the EOCO office but became more suspicious when the woman insisted that he use the vehicle provided by the officials.
According to him, his concerns increased when the woman was unable to produce an arrest warrant after he asked to see one.
“It became obvious to me that it was one of the recent kidnappings that have been going on, which is sponsored by the state,” he said.
Baffour Awuah said he therefore decided to drive away to protect himself, citing his responsibility to his constituents, the Minority Caucus, his family and his client.
“And that is why I had to run. I had to drive to safety. I’ve come to Parliament, and then my colleagues are behind me, and I thank them very much,” he said.
The incident occurred after proceedings in Baffoe’s bail application. She is facing a charge of abetment of crime in connection with the alleged publication of false information linked to the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account.
The High Court adjourned the bail hearing to September 24 after the prosecution requested more time to respond to the application.
Baffour Awuah’s side has also alleged that the reported attempt to arrest him was linked to his public defence of Baffoe, who police have accused of assisting the operator of the “Ghana Jollof” account to disseminate content
