The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has visited Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) to engage school authorities over allegations of sexual misconduct involving the suspended headmaster and female students.
The visit follows growing public concern over the allegations, which have prompted calls for accountability and stronger safeguards to protect students in educational institutions.
Before proceeding to the school, Dr Lartey paid a courtesy call on officials of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly. She is also expected to meet the alleged victims and their families to understand the circumstances surrounding the claims and assess the support they may require.
The minister is scheduled to hold a community engagement with relevant stakeholders to discuss the matter and address concerns about students’ safety and welfare. She is also expected to brief the media on the outcome of her engagements and outline possible measures to prevent similar incidents.
The case involves the school’s suspended headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, who is facing allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students. The allegations have triggered investigations by the relevant authorities and renewed scrutiny of child protection measures in schools.
The Ministry of Education has referred the criminal aspects of the case to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, while education authorities pursue administrative processes.
Dr Lartey’s visit forms part of efforts to coordinate support for affected students and strengthen institutional responses to the allegations.
The case has intensified calls for effective reporting systems, protection for students who come forward and appropriate action where wrongdoing is established.
