Dr James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, CEO of CenCES, says President John Dramani Mahama should be worried about Ghana’s security setup following recent drug-related arrests abroad.
Speaking on JoyNews on Monday, September 21, 2026, Dr Bomfeh said the arrests in the Netherlands, Paris and South Africa raised concerns about coordination among Ghana’s security agencies.
“His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama should be worried about his security setup. Internally and externally, coordination is a problem,” he said.
Dr Bomfeh said it was concerning that Ghana continued to be linked to drug cases abroad even though the country does not produce the narcotics involved.
“There are many things I can say to advance this argument, but because we are dealing with these narcotics, I will leave it at that,” he added.
He also referred to recent changes made by President Mahama to the country’s security setup, saying he had expected them to improve the sector.
“His Excellency recently did a shake-up, so I thought he was going to rather help that sector,” he said.
His comments come after a 52-year-old South African man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday, September 20, after allegedly arriving from Accra with substances suspected to be heroin worth more than R2 million.
According to South African authorities, the man’s luggage contained bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.
He is expected to appear before a South African court later this week to face drug trafficking-related charges.
Ghanaian authorities have not yet officially commented on the latest arrest.
