Veteran Nigerian actor Francis Duru, known for his memorable performances in Nollywood films spanning more than three decades, has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness.
His family announced his death on Friday, October 23, 2026, in a statement shared on his official Instagram page. The family did not disclose further details about the circumstances surrounding his passing.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents, Duru later moved to Nigeria, where he studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996.
He began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, but gained wider recognition for portraying young Ahanna in the 1995 film Rattlesnake, produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
Over the years, Duru built an extensive filmography, appearing in productions including Blood Money, Stigma, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons and Blood Vessel. His ability to take on roles across different genres helped establish him as a familiar face among Nigerian film audiences.
Beyond acting, he contributed to the industry through leadership and public service. He served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007.
His death comes two years after the loss of his youngest son, Ifeanyi, in 2024.
Earlier this year, Duru had publicly rejected social media reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness, describing footage circulated online as false.
The family has appealed for prayers, love and understanding as they mourn his passing. Details of his funeral arrangements had not been announced in the reports available.
