Ghanaians could approach the Christmas season with greater confidence in the foreign exchange market, following assurances from Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama that the cedi is expected to remain stable.

Dr Asiama gave the assurance on Monday, November 2, at the African Virtual Assets Summit 2026, expressing optimism about the currency’s outlook as demand for foreign exchange typically rises towards the end of the year.

“What I can promise is a good Christmas as far as the exchange rate is concerned. We will have a good Christmas,” he said.

His remarks offer reassurance to businesses, importers and households that often face concerns about exchange-rate movements during the festive period, when spending and demand for foreign currency can increase.

The Governor’s confidence comes against the backdrop of efforts by the central bank to maintain stability in the foreign exchange market.

The Bank of Ghana’s November 2 reference rates placed the US dollar at GH¢11.6142 for buying and GH¢11.6258 for selling. The pound sterling traded at GH¢15.5549 and GH¢15.5704, while the euro was quoted at GH¢12.9559 and GH¢12.9678 respectively.

The rates reflected average interbank transactions at the close of business on Friday, October 30.

Maintaining the cedi’s stability will be important as businesses prepare for increased commercial activity during the holiday season. Exchange-rate fluctuations can affect the cost of imported goods, business operations and household purchasing power.
