The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is preparing a new water supply schedule for affected communities in Accra, with residents expected to receive water two to three days a week.

The company’s Head of Public Relations and Communication, Stanley Martey, said it was dividing the affected communities into three or four zones to manage the available supply.

Speaking to Arafat Musah on Starr FM’s Morning Starr, Martey said the zoning exercise was expected to be completed by the end of the week, after which the schedule would be published to inform residents when water would be available in their areas.

“Definitely, they are not going to get water 24/7. They will get water between two and three days in a week,” he said.

Martey attributed the supply challenges to demand in Accra exceeding available production capacity, a situation worsened by the shutdown of the desalination plant in the latter part of 2025.

He said the closure increased pressure on the Weija and Kpong treatment plants, which now have to supply communities that previously expected water from the desalination facility.

He added that recent technical interventions had improved water flow in some affected areas after the company identified anomalies in the distribution system.

GWCL will monitor the new schedule to ensure that communities receive water as planned. Martey also encouraged residents to store water whenever it is available to help them cope with interruptions.

He further noted that Accra had not received additional water production capacity since 2015, leaving a longstanding gap between demand and supply.

The new schedule is expected to give residents clearer information about supply periods as the company manages the city’s water needs.
