The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) proposes revoking the licences of motorists who accumulate six traffic violation tickets within two years, requiring offenders to retrain before receiving new licences.

DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey announced the proposed measure as part of efforts to strengthen driver education and improve road safety.

He said drivers who reach the six-ticket threshold within two years would have their licences withdrawn and be required to return to the authority for retraining and re-issuance of their licences.

“We will seize your licence from you six times within two years. We will seize your licence from you and account for retraining and re-issuance of the driver’s licence,” Mr Kotey said.

He explained that the proposed policy would ensure that repeat traffic offenders receive additional training before being allowed back on the road.

The announcement comes as the DVLA prepares to launch its Skills Development Centre, an initiative aimed at strengthening driver education and skills development.

The proposed measure would place greater emphasis on driver competence and accountability, particularly among motorists who repeatedly breach traffic regulations.

However, the DVLA has yet to announce when the policy will take effect, how the six-ticket threshold will be applied, or what the retraining programme will involve.
