President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that Ghana will have its national airline back in operation before the end of his administration, revealing that efforts are underway to revive the carrier.

He disclosed this during a ceremony at the Russian University of Transport, where he received an honorary doctorate.

President Mahama said the airline revival forms part of the government’s broader plans to modernise the transport sector, improve connectivity and support economic growth.

He outlined ongoing infrastructure projects, including airport and seaport expansions, the rehabilitation of major roads and the development of Ghana’s railway network.

He also highlighted investments in new freight trains and the expansion of rail infrastructure to improve the movement of goods and passengers.

“New freight trains and the expansion of our railway network are also ongoing. And even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline. It is my hope that before I leave office we will have Ghana Airways back in the air,” he said.

The President stressed that an efficient transport system was essential for facilitating trade, connecting communities and creating economic opportunities.

He also called for stronger academic cooperation between Ghanaian and Russian institutions to develop the technical expertise needed to transform the transport industry.

He identified transport engineering, railway development, logistics, road safety and traffic management as areas for collaboration, saying such partnerships could equip Ghanaian professionals with specialised skills.

President Mahama said developing human capacity alongside infrastructure would be important to building an efficient and sustainable transport sector.
