A Ghanaian lecturer at Southern Illinois University (SIU), Dr Kofi Akamani, has been shot dead in Illinois, United States.
The 48-year-old professor was found after Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a shooting near Lake Road between Murphysboro and Carbondale at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 20.
Akamani was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Authorities have arrested his wife, 35-year-old Betty Akamani, in connection with the incident. She faces multiple charges as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continue.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains in its early stages and that no further information would be released at this time.
Dr Akamani was a professor in SIU Carbondale’s Department of Forestry, where he taught forest recreation and conservation social science.
His academic journey began in Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Development Planning, specialising in Urban Planning.
