The NPP Techiman South Constituency is demanding the immediate release or bail of Madam Salomey Awiti Baffoe, who was remanded in police custody after being accused of spreading false news.
The party made the demand during a press briefing at the Techiman South Constituency Office, where its Communications Officer, Mohammad Mukarram Abdallah, questioned the circumstances surrounding her arrest and continued detention.
According to the NPP, Madam Salomey was arrested at her home in Hansua, near Techiman, on September 13 and was later taken to the Adentan Circuit Court.
The Police have accused her of publishing and circulating false news and allegedly helping to redistribute content linked to the “Ghana Jollof” account. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Her lawyers have applied for bail, but she was remanded in police custody until September 30 while investigations continue.
Mr Abdallah questioned why she was arrested at night, taken to a court far from her home, and kept in custody despite her bail application.
“This matter is no longer only about one nurse. It is about the protection of constitutional rights, the limits of state power, and the future of democracy in Ghana,” he said.
The NPP said it was not seeking special treatment for Madam Salomey but equal treatment under the law.
“Remand is not punishment. Arrest is not conviction. Allegation is not proof,” the party said.
It called on the Attorney-General, Inspector-General of Police and other relevant authorities to review her continued detention and consider granting her bail.
The NPP Techiman South Constituency also said it would not remain silent while the rights of its constituents were at risk.
“The NPP Techiman South Constituency will not remain silent while the rights and dignity of a constituent are placed at risk. We will not allow the people of Techiman South to be treated as though they have no voice,” the party said.
