Land preparation has begun for the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced this in a post on X on Monday, September 21, 2026, saying the facility will replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit.
The new block will include specialised obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
It will also have an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, as well as antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the facility will also provide diagnostic imaging, laboratory and blood bank services, a pharmacy, and a Central Sterile Services Department.
Additional facilities will include physiotherapy and rehabilitation units, as well as spaces for teaching, research and conferences.
According to the minister, the project is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s investment in major health infrastructure.
“President Mahama is back with investments in major, world-class health infrastructure,” he said.
The project is expected to create a comprehensive centre for maternal, child and reproductive healthcare at Korle Bu.
