President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to draw strength from the vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the country marks Founder’s Day.
“Let us draw strength from Osagyefo’s vision and contribute in our own way to attaining the Resetting Ghana Agenda,” President Mahama said in a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, 2026.
He said Nkrumah’s pursuit of political freedom, Pan-African unity and self-reliance helped establish Ghana as a beacon of hope on the global stage.
President Mahama also pointed to Nkrumah’s famous declaration that “the black man is capable of managing his own affairs”, saying the principle continues to form part of Ghana’s national identity and pride.
While Nkrumah led the country’s struggle for political independence, President Mahama said Ghanaians still have the responsibility of building a prosperous nation.
“Just as Nkrumah fought for our political independence, we have a collective duty today to build a prosperous, equitable, and resilient Ghana,” he said.
The President therefore urged Ghanaians both at home and abroad to put aside their differences and embrace what he described as selfless patriotism.
He said working together would be necessary to achieve economic freedom and social justice while creating opportunities for future generations.
Dr Nkrumah led Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957 and is remembered for his advocacy for African unity, industrialisation and economic self-reliance.
