Sammy Gyamfi, Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to restore the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to Ghana’s Port Inspection Agencies.
The move follows a recent drug seizure in another country involving a consignment traced to one of Ghana’s ports.
In a post on X on September 21, Mr Gyamfi said the incident raised concerns about the monitoring and inspection systems at Ghana’s ports.
He noted that NACOC, which is responsible for controlling and preventing narcotics trafficking, was removed from the list of Port Inspection Agencies in June 2018.
“It is clear that the said decision weakened NACOC’s port inspection function and denied them the ability to detect and prevent drug trafficking through the country’s port of entry and exit,” he said.
Mr Gyamfi said it was therefore welcome news that President Mahama had directed that NACOC be restored to the list of Port Inspection Agencies and given access to Ghana’s entry and exit points by air, land and sea.
He also said the President had directed that scanners and personnel at the ports be changed immediately.
Mr Gyamfi expressed confidence that NACOC could help tackle drug trafficking if given the necessary support.
He said the measures, if properly implemented, would strengthen checks at Ghana’s ports and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
