The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the ongoing debate about drug trafficking in Ghana.
In a post on X on September 20, Mr Dafeamekpor said the NPP could not win the argument, pointing to several drug seizures and arrests recorded under previous administrations.
“NPP CANNOT WIN THE COCAINE DEBATE IN GHANA,” he stated.
He listed cases involving cocaine and heroin seized at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), Ghana Post and other locations between 2017 and 2024.
Among the cases he cited was the seizure of about 56kg of cocaine at Ghana Post in January 2018, which he said involved six Ghanaians.
He also mentioned a 166kg cocaine seizure at the KIA in June 2024 involving two British nationals and another 76kg seized at a DHL facility at the airport in July 2024.
Mr Dafeamekpor further cited a January 2009 US Department of State report which described Ghana as a transshipment point for illegal drugs, particularly cocaine from South America and heroin from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The report said drugs were being moved through Accra’s Kotoka International Airport to Europe and the United States and that drug trafficking was also contributing to domestic drug use.
Using the cases, Mr Dafeamekpor argued that drug trafficking is a longstanding national problem and should not be turned into a partisan issue.
“So let’s stop the politics and support Govt efforts to fight the drug menace as a Nation,” he said.
He said Ghana needed a united national effort to tackle drug trafficking instead of political exchanges over which party should be blamed.
