President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing the interests of developing countries.

In a congratulatory message shared on Facebook, President Mahama described Lula’s victory as well-deserved and highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Ghana and Brazil.

He said he looked forward to expanding cooperation between the two countries, with the aim of delivering mutual benefits for their citizens.

“Congratulations to President Luiz Lula da Silva on your well-deserved re-election as President of Brazil. Brazil and Ghana share a rich history, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations,” Mahama wrote.

The Ghanaian leader also pointed to the Accra Reset initiative as a platform for promoting cooperation among countries in the Global South.

“Together, through the Accra Reset initiative, we will continue championing the Global South agenda for the betterment of our peoples,” he added.

Mahama’s message followed Brazil’s presidential run-off election on Sunday, October 25, 2026, in which Lula defeated Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party to secure another term in office.

Official results from Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed Lula receiving 51.79 per cent of the valid votes, representing 64,256,232 ballots. Bolsonaro secured 48.21 per cent, equivalent to 59,826,041 votes.

Lula, 80, returned to the presidency in 2023 after previously leading Brazil from 2003 to 2010. His re-election is expected to continue his administration’s engagement with international partners on development and multilateral cooperation.
