"This Is an Abuse of Power" – Afenyo-Markin Accuses EOCO of Intimidating Manhyia South MP

Minority accuses EOCO of weaponising state power against Manhyia South MP 
The Minority in Parliament has accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of abusing its powers in the reported attempt to arrest Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, September 23, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the incident amounted to the use of a state institution to intimidate and undermine the MP.

“What is happening today amounts to abuse of power, weaponizing a state institution to undermine, abuse, intimidate a citizen who is a lawyer and a member of parliament,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority Caucus had listened to Baffour Awuah’s account of the incident and was concerned about how the matter was handled.

“It’s most unfortunate. As a caucus, we have listened to our colleague,” he said.

He questioned why EOCO did not use a different approach if its intention was simply to invite the MP for questioning.

“If indeed EOCO meant well and wanted to act in good faith, they could have adopted some other well humane approach rather than creating the scene,” he said.

The Minority Leader said state institutions must use their powers responsibly and respect the rights of citizens, including elected Members of Parliament.
