Students at the University of Ghana are planning a demonstration on Monday, November 2, 2026, to protest a reported 26% increase in accommodation fees at university halls and facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL).
The Concerned Students’ Movement says the revised charges are excessive and is demanding a reduction in fees, refunds for students who have already paid the new rates, and greater transparency in decisions affecting accommodation costs.
Speaking to Citi News, a member of the movement, Ishmael Oduro-Acheampong, said the group was engaging the Dean of Students’ Affairs and other university authorities in an attempt to resolve the matter before the planned protest.
He questioned the scale of the increases, citing instances where accommodation that previously cost between GH¢3,000 and GH¢4,000 was now reportedly priced at about GH¢8,000.
“Just two semesters ago, the facility where students were paying about GH₵3,000 and GH₵4,000 now is being priced around GH₵8,000,” he said.
The group argues that students should be consulted before significant fee adjustments are introduced and given clear explanations for the changes.
It has also raised concerns about whether the quality of accommodation and services provided justifies the new prices, insisting that higher charges should be matched by improved facilities.
The movement is further calling for greater accountability from the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) in its handling of student welfare issues.
The planned demonstration comes amid broader concerns about accommodation affordability at public universities in Ghana. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has previously proposed considering a 5% to 10% annual cap on rent increases at public universities.
The students say they hope engagements with university management will produce a resolution, but they intend to proceed with the protest if their concerns remain unaddressed.
