The government is introducing a contra-flow system for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major routes into Accra’s central business district, in a move aimed at reducing delays and improving public transport reliability.
The arrangement will begin on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and will operate during peak periods — from 6am to 9am and 4pm to 8pm.
The affected corridors are Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra, all of which experience heavy traffic during peak commuting hours.
Under the arrangement, selected sections of the roads will temporarily allow authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the normal direction of traffic. The designated lanes will be reserved strictly for Ayalolo buses.
Private cars, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be allowed to use the contra-flow lanes.
The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads.
Police officers will be stationed at key locations and intersections to manage traffic and enforce the restrictions.
The government expects the intervention to shorten journey times, improve Ayalolo punctuality and reduce congestion on major approaches to the CBD.
