A police operation at a lounge around Achimota Mile 7 has led to the detention of 64 people as investigators probe suspected illegal possession and handling of firearms.
The operation was conducted by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police together with the National SWAT team. It followed complaints from residents about alleged criminal activity in and around the lounge, including concerns over firearms being openly displayed and possibly traded.
According to the police, officers also impounded a blue Acura vehicle after finding a pistol holster inside. No one at the scene claimed the item, leading investigators to take the vehicle to Police Headquarters for further examination.
One of the individuals arrested, Theophilus Ashon, allegedly claimed to be a member of the Ghana Police Service attached to CID Operations. Police checks, however, reportedly found no record linking him to the service.
A search conducted on Ashon allegedly resulted in the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Investigators later arrested another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, at a residence in Atico. Police said they found three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges and 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition during the search.
The police said the 64 suspects remain in custody and will be processed for court as investigations continue.
