The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to begin a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas to address commercial losses, improve revenue collection, and combat electricity theft.
In a public announcement, the company said the exercise would cover prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and their associated wiring to verify the integrity of metering systems and ensure accurate electricity billing.
ECG said the announcement serves as official notice of the exercise and that it will not issue separate notification letters or appointment notices before its teams visit customers.
It has therefore urged customers, landlords, estate managers, facility managers and security personnel to cooperate with authorised personnel and not deny or delay access solely because they have not received an individual notice.
The company cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to provide safe and reasonable access to utility employees or agents for meter reading and equipment inspections, provided they present verifiable identification and follow the procedures in the utility’s customer charter.
ECG said all employees and authorised agents involved in the exercise would carry official identification cards. Customers are encouraged to verify their identities before allowing them onto their premises.
Verification can be done by calling ECG’s customer service centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD code on any mobile network.
To verify a staff member, customers should dial *226#, select Option 5 for “Verify Staff”, and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member. The staff member’s full name, region, and district will then appear for confirmation.
