New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says US President Donald Trump has agreed to grant an immediate visa to the mother of 15-year-old Ghanaian boy Javits Frimpong, who was shot dead in the Bronx.
Mr Mamdani announced the development in a social media post on October 31, 2026, after speaking by phone with President Trump.
He said the arrangement would allow Javits’ mother to travel from Ghana to the United States to attend her son’s funeral and say goodbye to him in person.
“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away. Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person,” the mayor wrote.
“I just got off the phone with President Trump, and he has agreed to grant her a visa immediately. All of New York City is mourning this tragedy,” he added.
Javits was shot in the abdomen while walking near a school in the Claremont neighbourhood of the Bronx on Thursday morning.
The shooting occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m. near East 171st Street and Crotona Place. Police officers rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have launched a search for three teenage boys, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, in connection with the shooting. The suspects were reportedly last seen wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks.
Police have yet to establish the motive for the attack as investigations continue.
